Proposals. Closing pubs at 10.30PM. Interaction by María, Gema and Elena, Avanzado level students (2012-13)

7:37'

Listen to this GREAT dialogue and notice how well they do, in terms of presenting the topic, explaining their standpoints, discussing the topic and trying to find some kind of conclusion or common ground.

List of Mistakes

Have you heard THE NEWS about THE LAW ON PUBS / PUBS HAVING TO CLOSE AT 10.30?
Have you heard about the new pub law?

BOE - is not English, so it's impossible to understand in English. You cannot use Spanish acronyms in English. You should say the name in Spanish and then explain what it stands for in English. For this interaction, it's best to say "Have you heard the news?" or "about the proposal?"

I have READ /red/ the new law (THAT IS) ABOUT PUBS CLOSING NOW AT 10:30

I have problemS (not "a problems")

In my case iT's a problem

Where AM I going to go? /ámái/

IN the evenings

I cannot spend so much time OUTDOORS (not "in the street")

Another reason WHY (not "because") I don't agree with this law is because...

a licence - /a láisins/

I had to adapt my ESTABLISHMENT (not "local"!!! The local authorities...)

We have BEEN PUNISHED over the last years

/síriusli/ - seriously

THIS IS HOW IT WORKS, YES (not "It's something how it goes")

I can't afford it because THE JOURNEY is more expensive than the time I'm going to GET TO BE with my friends

for the people who LIKE going out at night

disturb PEOPLE around

IF /PROVIDED they take measures SO AS NOT TO DISTURB PEOPLE IN THEIR HOMES / SO THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT DISTURBED / SO THAT PEOPLE (subject) SOCIALIZING (non-personal verb!) DON'T DISTURB PEOPLE WHO ARE AT HOME - If they take measures NOT TO DISTURB people

Have you thought about what STUDENTS ARE going to do after 10PM / after PUBS CLOSE? For sure, they're going to drink IN THE STREET.

I DON'T ALLOW MY CUSTOMERS TO BE LOUD AND I DON'T PLAY MUSIC LOUD, EITHER.

But young people WILL BE JUST DRINKING IN/ON THE STREET

They just want to LEAVE the pub for a cigarette.

These people ARE ALSO DISTURBING

take INTO account ALL OF THESE THINGS

My problem is not ABOUT CLOSING THAT EARLY. IT'S ABOUT THE NOISE, REGARDLESS THE TIME.

make me FEEL UNEASY/bad BECAUSE WE ARE DISTURBING PEOPLE IN THEIR HOMES

SOME BAR OWNERS AND I ARE GOING TO COLLECT SIGNATURES AT CHANGE DOT ORG
We are going to create an action on change dot org, to collect signatures requesting pubs close at 12.00PM. If we GATHER (whatever number) then we can put more pressure on the authorities to change the law.

IF YOU AGREE WE CLOSE AT 12.00, you can sign our statement.
If you agree with pubs closing at midnight...

/sígnachurs/ - signatures (noun) - to sign /tu sain/ (verb)

It's not SO MUCH the TIME but ABOUT PEOPLE BEING RESPONSIBLE (not "the responsible of the people")

AVOID TRANSFER MISTAKES (learn English from noticing how natives speak! Jot down Useful language!): mistakes about word order (syntax) arising from word-by-word translation from Spanish (transfer).

Notice also this kind of mistakes: Transfer Mistakes and make sure you do some Oral Drilling with a good collection of sentences (Useful language) to overcome fossilization and automatize correct production!
