Grammar Teams. The past (time and tense)
Source: Your teacher’s comments on time and tense and for the slips of paper, explanations of the use of the past appearing in Advanced Grammar in Use. A self-study reference and practice book for advanced learners or English (with answers). By Martin Hewings. Cambridge University Press, 2003.

1. Take turns to read these notes on past tenses. Please, skim it ALL first.

2. Then read it again taking turns again, but after each block, paraphrase it (explain it in your own words) and/or ask questions about what you don’t understand.

3. Discuss the theory and the examples, try to swap tenses in the examples to see if the theory works! Finally, try to find your own examples as a group, or your own selection of the examples in the notes which you can easily remember. Jot them down in your notebook as reminders of all the theory-in-practice you know about!

N.B.: Please, don’t copy the explanations! This is a reading/speaking/listening exercise! Just jot down useful examples at the end of the session.
